Metronomes & Magic

Metronomes & Magic was my entry to the 2025 GMTK Game Jam which had the theme of "Loop".

It is a FPS and Rhythm game hybrid, where players must explore a dungeon to find spells which they can equip to a looping bar of 8 beats, which are synced to the music.

The game was very well received by other Jam participants, ranking #43 in creativity and #105 in enjoyment out of the over 9,000 games submitted. It even featured briefly in the official GMTK video!

Having 96 hours rather than the 48 hours I'm accustomed to with most game jams, I was able to be a lot more ambitious with both concept and scope. This lead to a highly polished little demo which I'm very proud of. In my eyes, the highlights of this project are:

  • Metronome system which is synced to and keeps in time with music

  • Spell system which allows player's to drag any spell onto any beat and requires they hit the beat within a certain threshold to cast.

  • Enemies which move and act in time to the metronome

  • Unique art-style using posterization and a limited palette to a great effect

  • A relatively large and intertwining dungeon to explore
